Our History
History of our founder Mr and Mrs Tomita, as Japanese tableware specialists, began in 1978, when they opened a shop called 'Mashu Tougei' in London. At a time when Japanese tableware was still rare in the UK, they began importing authentic tableware from Japan with the aim of sharing the beauty of Japanese tableware and food culture with people overseas.
Founded in 1993 as UTSUWA NO YAKATA at Yaohan Plaza — later known as Oriental City — in Colindale, North London, our shop has built a long-standing reputation for introducing authentic Japanese food culture and tableware to customers across Europe.
Following the closure of Oriental City in 2008, we relocated to Pacific Plaza in Wembley before opening our independent store in Harrow Weald in 2011. This new chapter allowed us to further develop and share the unique world of “Doki” with our customers.
Mr and Mrs Tomita, were born in the Mino region of Japan, home to many
of the country’s renowned pottery makers. Inspired by their heritage, they
established the business with the hope of creating a bridge between Japan and the UK by bringing authentic Japanese tableware and craftsmanship to as many people as possible.
